It could be that I have no experience with Red Velvet cake but with this recipe the cake was much to heavy. The Icing was bland and honestly tasted like flour. Overall the cake was nothing special. However I am willing to try it again just to make sure it was not my own fault.

Instructions to make Red Velvet Cake:
  1. preheat oven to 350
  2. mix flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa. Set aside
  3. Mix oil and sugar. Add eggs one at a time blending well after each. Add vinegar, vanilla, and coloring. Mix well.
  4. Blend in flour mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  5. Pour into 3 greased 9 inch round pans. Bake for 30 minutes.
  6. For icing beat butter and cream cheese until smooth. Add vanilla and blend well. Slowly add powered sugar. Blend in nuts.

Overall the cake was nothing special. However I am willing to try it again just to make sure it was not my own fault. A true red velvet cake will always have a cream cheese frosting! This is similar to the original recipe that began the red velvet craze. It was developed by the Adams Extract company in Gonzales, Tex.
